The question nobody asks out loud
There is a question most parents think but never type into a support chat: if I put my kid's name on this thing, does it show up when someone Googles it?
It is a fair question. It is also one most tools never really answer, because somewhere along the way they collapsed two completely different questions into a single switch.
The first question is about sharing. Can the people I invited open this page? The second question is about discovery. Can a stranger stumble onto it?
Those are not the same question, and they do not deserve the same answer. At Belovity they are two separate settings, and the combination you would never choose on purpose is the one you cannot create by accident.
Shareable and findable are not the same thing
Why the distinction matters
Shareable means you hand someone a link and it opens for them. That is it. You sent it, they tapped it, they are looking at your gift list.
Findable means something else entirely. Someone who has never heard of you types a name into a search box and lands on your family. No link, no invitation, no relationship.
You almost always want the first one. You rarely want the second one. When a tool bundles them together, the price of "easy to send to grandma" quietly becomes "listed on the open web."
The three places a family page can be found
There are really only three doors.
Web search. Google, Bing, and anything else crawling the open web.
The site's own search. Most platforms have an in-product directory, and most people forget it exists until they find themselves in it.
The link itself. Forwarded, screenshotted, dropped into a group chat. This one is not a search problem, but it is a discovery problem, and it deserves its own answer.
Why "I'll fix it later" isn't a plan
Changing a setting today does not rewind the internet. Once something is out there, you are no longer the only one holding a copy of it, and you do not control the timeline for anything downstream.
So the only version of this you actually control is the one where it never happens. Start closed, open deliberately, and you never have to find out how long a change takes to travel.
How Belovity approaches it
Two settings, not one
Open your family page settings and you will find two separate controls, stacked one above the other.
GIFT LIST VISIBILITY is either Followers only or Anyone with link. That is the sharing switch.
SEARCH VISIBILITY is either Visible or Hidden. That is the discovery switch.
Turning on Anyone with link does exactly what it says and nothing more. It never reaches over and flips search on behind your back. The help text in the app says it plainly: search visibility controls who can discover your family page, not who can see your gift lists.
Private is where you start
A brand-new family page is created with visibility set to Followers only. You do not have to go hunting through settings to lock it down, because it was never unlocked.
While it is set to Followers only, the page is not merely hidden from search. It does not load at all for people you have not approved. Someone who was forwarded the address gets turned away before any of your content is rendered.
That includes automated visitors. A crawler holding your URL runs into the same check that turns away a stranger, and it meets that check before there is anything to read.
The bad combination can't happen by accident
Switch your gift list visibility back to Followers only and search visibility clears itself to Hidden in the same motion. You do not have to remember to do it.
That means you cannot end up with a page that is closed to visitors but still marked as search-visible. The form simply will not hold that pair.
It is one less thing to think about when you are tightening things up after an event, which is exactly when nobody wants to be auditing settings.
When it's Hidden, Belovity says so out loud
Hidden is not a passive setting where Belovity just stops mentioning you. Your family page and your gift list pages are served with an explicit instruction attached: do not index this page, and do not follow the links on it.
Both halves of that instruction are sent, every time those pages are served, for as long as the setting is on.
The in-app family search plays by the same rule
Belovity has its own family search, so relatives who join later can find the people they are actually related to. It is a genuinely useful thing, and it is covered by the same switch.
Set search visibility to Hidden and your family stops appearing there too. One setting, both surfaces.
People already connected to your family still see you in their own results. Hiding from strangers does not hide you from your own followers, which would be a strange thing to do to your own aunt.
A few more details worth knowing. The search is only available to people who are signed in, so a signed-out visitor never sees it at all. It does not start matching until someone has typed at least three characters. And a result shows very little: the family name, the family image, and the usernames of the owner and admins.
You choose what's in the URL
Your page address is yours to set. Lowercase letters, numbers, and dashes.
If you would rather the link not carry a full family name, change it. Nothing forces your surname into the address, and plenty of families would rather it was not there.
Changing it moves the page, and the old address stops working. Worth doing before you send links out rather than after.
The invite link is a separate lever again
Sharing with people happens through an invite link. It does not happen by making your page findable, and the two were never connected.
You can regenerate that invite link whenever you want. The moment you do, the previously shared link stops working. A link that got forwarded three households sideways is not access for life.
Regenerating does not punish the people already in. Existing followers and anyone waiting on approval are unaffected.
Where the upgrade sits
Search visibility control is part of Belovity's paid feature set. New family pages get it during the free trial period, and there is no card required to have it.
If the feature is not active on your page, tapping Hidden does not silently do nothing, which would be the worst possible outcome. It opens a short explanation of what the setting unlocks. Nothing about your page changes while that is on screen. The setting stays exactly where you left it.
And the free fallback is honest and genuinely strong: leave gift list visibility on Followers only, and there is nothing for a crawler to read in the first place.
Three setups people actually run
The baby list you want zero strangers on
Gift list visibility: Followers only. Search visibility: Hidden. Every follower request reviewed one at a time.
The result is a page with no web listing, no listing inside Belovity, and nothing that loads for anyone you did not personally approve.
The wedding list you want easy to send
Gift list visibility: Anyone with link. Search visibility: Hidden.
Anyone you send the link to opens it in one tap. No account to create, no approval queue, no friction on the day people are actually trying to buy you something. And nobody who was not sent the link ever encounters it.
After the event, regenerate the invite link so old forwards go dead.
The extended-family page
Gift list visibility: Followers only. Search visibility: Visible, on purpose, so cousins who join Belovity later can actually find you.
Set the page URL to something generic rather than a full family name.
The result is a family that is findable by name inside Belovity and still unreadable to anyone who has not been approved.
Audit your current setup in five minutes
Here is a short list you can work through today, on whatever tool you are using now.
Search your own family name plus the word "registry" in a browser you are not signed into. Anything come up?
Search the site's own directory for your family name while signed out. Then again while signed in as a different account, if you have one handy.
Open your page address in a private window. Does it show you something, or does it stop you?
Look at that address. Whose name is in it?
Find out whether your current tool has a separate search setting at all, or whether "public" is the only word it knows.
Check whether your invite link can be replaced. If it cannot, every link you have ever sent is permanent access.
Close
Being easy to share with the people you chose, and being easy to find by people you did not, are two different features. They should have two different switches.
Belovity keeps them separate, starts you private, refuses to leave you sitting in the unsafe pair, and tells search engines to stay out when you say so.
Open your family page settings, look at both switches, and set them the way you actually meant to.
