Draft It Now, Share It Later

Belovity gift list items start as drafts and stay invisible until you publish them, so you can build, price-check, and cut over weeks without anyone watching.

Gift List How To

The list isn't ready, and everyone can already see it

Picture what a half-finished gift list looks like to someone who opens it.

Three items on a baby list, and one of them is a placeholder you meant to go back and replace. The stroller you added, then found for eighty dollars less somewhere else, then added again, so now there are two. And the thing you already decided against, still sitting there, still buyable by whoever gets to it first.

That is the version of your list a visitor sees if the list goes live the moment you start typing. So you either rush the whole thing in one sitting, or you keep putting it off.

There is another way to do this. Nothing is visible until you say so. Item by item, and list by list.

This piece covers how drafts work in Belovity, how to switch a whole list off in the middle of a rework, and what happens to the things you decide to cut.

The four states an item can be in

Draft

Saved, priced, complete with notes and a link, and invisible to everyone except your family's owners and admins.

Draft is the default. Anything you have not explicitly published is sitting in it.

In your editor's item list, a draft carries a plain gray badge, so you can see at a glance what is still unfinished.

Published

The only state a visitor ever sees on your list.

A published item is stamped with the moment you published it, not the moment you created it.

Purchased

Someone marked it bought.

Once the quantity you asked for is covered, the item drops off the visible list on its own. Nobody buys the second high chair.

Archived

This is what "remove" actually does.

The item is gone from your list and gone from every visitor's view. The record underneath it is kept.

How Belovity approaches it

Every save asks the publish question

There are two buttons at the bottom of the item editor, not one.

Add item to registry saves it and publishes it. Save but don't publish saves everything and shows nobody.

You get the same pair when you come back to an item that already exists: Update registry item, or Unlist registry item.

Unlisting is not deleting. The item keeps its price, its notes, its size, its color, its link, and its quantity. It just stops appearing. Publish it again later and it comes back with a fresh publish date.

You can build a list for weeks before it exists to anyone

Price-check without a witness. Add the stroller at full price. Come back after a sale and edit the number. Visitors never saw either version.

Change your mind in private. Add six things, publish two, and leave the other four sitting in draft for as long as you like.

Stop mid-session. A half-built list is just a list with nothing published yet.

No pings. Belovity never notifies your followers when you add, edit, publish, or unlist an item. The only gift list notifications anyone gets are about purchases.

An empty list is an invisible list

A gift list with zero published items does not just look empty to a visitor. It is not there.

It will not show up in your family page's list navigation. And someone who has the direct link to it gets turned away and sent along to whatever they are allowed to see.

Owners and admins are always the exception. You can open your own unpublished list any time.

The practical effect is that you can create a list the day you get the idea, and it stays a private workspace until the first item goes live.

A whole list has an on/off switch

Every gift list has a toggle next to its name. On means visitors can reach it. Off means they cannot.

Switching a list off removes it from your family page navigation and blocks the direct link for followers and visitors alike. Every item stays exactly where it is, published ones included.

Switch it back on and the list returns in the state you left it. Nothing needs rebuilding.

You would use this when you are reworking a whole list at once, or retiring a list after the event without deleting it. Owners and admins keep full access to a switched-off list from the family editor.

Removing an item doesn't erase your gift history

"Remove" archives the item rather than destroying it. It disappears from your list and from every visitor's view right away.

What survives is the record that somebody bought it: who they were, the quantity, and the note they left.

That record stays readable on your Gifts Received page, listed under the item's name, even after the item itself is gone from the list.

This matters more than it sounds like it does. Cutting an item late in the game should not blank out the thank-you note you still owe someone.

Changes to your lists and items are recorded behind the scenes as well.

Drafting from a store page

The Belovity browser add-on saves items straight from a retailer's page, and it asks the same publish question. You choose, per item, whether it goes live or lands as a draft.

No gift list yet? The add-on can create one for you as a draft list, switched off from the moment it exists, so your first captured item has somewhere to go without anything going public.

Worth knowing: draft lists still count toward the number of lists your family can have.

Three real setups

The baby list built over six weeks

Week one, you create the list, leave it switched off, and add four things as drafts.

Week three, you price-check the big items and edit the numbers. Still nothing published.

Week five, you publish twelve items and cut three that turned out to be duplicates.

Week six, you switch the list on and share the link. Visitors arrive at a finished list, not a work in progress.

The birthday list mid-rework

The list has been live for a month and half of it is already bought. You want to swap out the remaining items entirely.

Switch the list off for an afternoon. Visitors lose access, and your published items stay put.

Rebuild. Unlist what no longer fits, publish the new items, and switch it back on.

Nobody watched the middle of that.

The item you cut

Grandma bought the play kitchen in March. In June you clear out the list and remove the play kitchen.

The item is gone from the list. The "play kitchen, Grandma, 1" line is still sitting on your Gifts Received page.

Nothing about removing an item removes what somebody did for you.

Checklist: before you share your link

Open your family page in a private browser window, signed out. Count what you can actually see.

Check your editor's item list for gray badges. Those are drafts, and nobody else can see them.

Confirm every list you don't want visible is switched off.

Confirm every list you do want visible has at least one published item.

If you unlisted an item while editing, decide whether it should stay unlisted or come back.

Check Gifts Received for anything bought on an item you removed, so nobody goes unthanked.

Start it today, share it when it's ready

A gift list is a decision made in pieces, over weeks. The tool should let it be that.

In Belovity, drafts are the default. Publishing is a deliberate act. Switching a list off is one toggle. And removing something never erases who gave you what.

So start your list today, publish nothing, and share it when it is actually ready.
